Overall, i am pleased with the final result of my magazine.

COVER

On the cover i used a font with sound waves which relates to the name of the magazine 'Amplitude' (AMPLITUDE: The height of a wave from its trough or crest to its midpoint. As the amplitude of a sound wave increases, so does its volume.) This relates to the tagline 'Music with volume'. All this relates to the target audience as they generally enjoy loud music.

This is similar to the way Kerrang use a cracked/shattered font in their Masthead to relate to their tag line 'Life is loud'. It also relates to their target audience in the same way as my magazine.

I chose the mise-en-scene of the main image just to be a plain black background. I thought this would make the people in the main image stand out more, as the focus of this issue is about this band. I thought it would also be a good contrast with the red in the magazine.

I choose to use RED as the main colour for the magazine. This is because the connotations of red (energy and passion) relate to the target audience as they are 'defined by attitude and passion'.

The arrangement of performers in the main image:
I decided they should all be looking at the camera to make a better connection with the reader.
They are arranged so the front-man of the band stands out more by being more in focus than the rest of the band, and also, he is arranged so he is over the top of the magazine title and tagline. This makes him stand out more which will grab the readers attention better as most fans recognize the band by the front-man.
I decided for the performers in the main image to not be smiling, but to look serious without looking miserable. I decided this because it relates to the Subhead saying 'Will they survive the days to come...'.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My magazine is similar to existing publications in many ways.
The Masthead
is at the Top of page with a strapline above it informing the reader of something special about this issue. The main image dominates the cover, with the people in the image making eye contact with the reader. It is also similar in the way that the front-man in the main image goes above/over the Masthead, making him stand out more.
The cover stands out with its use of colour. The colours black and red and common in this genre of music magazine, but the yellow makes the product stand out from others. The colour yellow has a connotation of happiness, which will be more likely to grab the readers' attention.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I wanted my magazine to represent the audience profile of Kerrang magazine:
''Individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty'.
This main image on the cover relates to the attitude and passion. The way the people in the photo are posing suggests attitude, with arms crossed and serious faces.
The language throughout the magazine is not too formal, which relates to their independent side, as they speak their own way, with certain slang words which the magazine uses.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Bauer Media would be a good choice of publisher as they also publish Kerrang, and that is a very similar magazine aimed at the same target audience as my magazine.
It would be stocked in shops like WHSmiths and also newsagents across the country. It will also be available to buy online and delivered.
They would choose to stock the magazine as it offers an alternative to Kerrang magazine but targets the same audience, who may be looking for something new.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
Demographics:
The main age range for my target audience will be 15 to 40 year olds (similar to Kerrang magazine). Obviously, people younger and older than this will still want to buy the magazine.
Kerrang magazine mainly appeals to men, so my magazine will also mainly appeal to men, but females do still buy/read kerrang magazine, so there will be some appeal for female readers.

Psychographics:
This will be the same as what i researched about Kerrang magazine as my magazine is very simular:
The Audience profile is described as:
'Individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty'.
This shows the audience comes under the Individualists category.

Socio-economic groups:
Again it will be very similar to Kerrang's classifications:
239000 readers are classified as A B and C1 (These are people with a high status in society who earn a high wage. For example; lawers, doctors and teachers. Also office workers and nurses)
178000 readers are classified as C2 D and E (These are people with a lower status in society who earn a lower wage or are unemployed. For example: Skilled/semi skilled and unskilled manual workers).
Although, it may be slightly more aimed at the C,D and E classes.

How did you attract/address your audience?
My magazine will attract my target audience with its use of langauge.
The language in the magazine won't be too formal and will use slang words, which will make the magazine more appealing than other magazine which are too formal. This will appeal to the target audience as they will prefer the more informal articles. The language will also be more humorous/ less serious and will also contain puns, which will amuse the reader, which again, will appeal more to the target audience.
The overall look of the magazine will attract the audience with its use of colours. The use of Black makes the colours red and yellow stand out, making the cover more eye-catching. The colour red relates to the target audience's passion in music, while the colour yellow is a bright happy colour which will please the readers eye.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I was able to make just one person from the main image overlap the Masthead. I did this by editing the photo in Photoshop. I cut around the top of the head using the magnetic lasso tool and saved that as a separate picture file. I then just uploaded that into the indesign project and lined it up with the original picture so it made it look like the top of the head was coming out from the picture and over the top of the Masthead.

There were no ideas that I had that could not be achieved with the software I used (InDesign and Photoshop.)

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that I have improved my technical skills of editing and designing the magazine since doing the preliminary task. My knowledge about the layout of a magazine has improved. For example, i know how important is to have certain things in certain places, like for the barcode to be easy to find, but not to distract the reader from the main focus of the magazine.
It is also important for the person/people in the main image to be making eye contact with the reader to make a better connection with the reader. I also understand how the mise-en-scene of the main image is important in representing the target audience, as it will make a better connection with reader.
I understand more about the contrast between colours and the connotations of colour, which can have an impact on the reader and their feelings about the magazine.

AS Media Coursework Main Task - Planning and evaluation of the article

Here are the 2 articles i looked at:

ROCKSOUND ARTICLE:
It's a profile of the band 'Green Day'.
It starts by setting the scene, by describing where they are and what they are doing.
The sentence 'Tre Cool is posing for the camera, attempting to spurt water from his mouth "kinda like Moby Dick"', shows that the article is not very serious and is humorous. The fact that they use the word 'kinda' instead of 'kind of' shows the article is more informal. This would appeal to the target audience because that is the way they would write/speak. I will be writing my magazine in this way.

KERRANG:
This article is an interview with 'The All-American Rejects'. I'm not doing an interview but I wanted to look at the language used in a similar genre of magazine.
The magazine asks a question and the band members then respond to that question. This makes the article more informal.
The title of the article is a pun. They have a song called 'Dirty Little Secret' and the name of the article is 'Dirty Little Secrets'. This will appeal to fans of the band.
The article is humorous and will keep the reader interested.

-

From researching the 2 double page spreads, I have chosen to write my article as a 'profile' as the article is under the section 'SPOTLIGHT' which is to give the reader more of an insight on the band. It will be from the view of the writer, but some parts are from the bands point-of-view. This is because the reader will enjoy reading something that the band has said, similar to an interview. The language will be informal using slang words which relate to the target audience.

When I looked at the 2 articles from other magazines, I notice they used pull-quotes. I decided to have a pull-quote from the article at the top of the article to try and grab the readers attention and hopefully making them want to read more.

-

MY DRAFT:

One Day Over have just finished recording two new songs, due for release in early 2010. “It was a huge rush trying to record two whole songs in one day,” says Marcus. “I only had time to record vocals for one song that day and recorded the vocals for the other song in my living room a few days later.” Despite the short time to record, they did manage to record the instruments for each track.
“I could only stay at the studio for about an hour because i had to leave early for bloody work,” said Elliott. “I had time to record my bass parts for each song before having to rush off, but it was a bit mental. I was meant to be having an hour lunch break from work to record, but ended up staying for almost three hours! My boss let me off... luckily!”
Despite all their trouble over the years, they are back on track and ready to rock harder than ever! One Day Over will be heading back to the studio in the near future to record a new EP that will blow your mind and make your ears bleed (in a good way.) You can expect lots of heavy riffs, catchy sing-along choruses and beefy brutal breakdowns.

AS Media Coursework Main Task - Photo Editing

The picture above is the original photo i took.

I edited the main image for the cover in two ways:

Firstly i changed the lighting effects on the picture. this was because the original lighting in the picture was too bright.
I opened the picture in Photoshop and went to FILTER > RENDER > Lighting Effects. From there i edited the lighting effects to make it not as bright/duller.

Secondly, i decided to have the background as just one colour. The quickist and easist way i did this was just to get a Black paint brush tool and paint over the background.

I could of also used the lasso tool or the magnetic lasso tool and remove the background itself. or i could of cut the people in the image and pasted them onto a transparent background, and place that into my magazine.

-----------

I also was experimenting with different ways to edit the picture. The picture above shows this. I decided not to use this picture as it looked a bit unprofessional.
I edited the lighting, and added a 'lens flare' (FILTER > RENDER) and made it look like the light was coming from the hand.

AS Media Coursework Main Task - Photos

PHOTOS

FRONT COVER
(main image)

This first picture is the 'Main Image' for the cover. It is a medium/long shot of the featured band. The reason i choose to take the photo like this is because i want the picture to fit the whole of the cover page, and then for the rest of the magazine (i.e., the Masthead, Main Flash, Main Cell) to go over the picture, but leaving the faces of the people in the photo visable.

The reason i chose the blue background is so i just had one colour in the background, which would make it easier for when i wish to edit the photo in photoshop. You wouldn't see the top/bottom of the picture.

COSTUMES

The clothes they are wearing represents the style of the target audience, with the skinny jeans, bands t-shirts, hats and hoodies.

POSES

They are stood in different positions to the camara. I did this so the main focus is on the frontman of the band. Also, the 2 people at the back are slightly less in focus, again drawing your eye to the frontman.
The frontman is also posing differently to the rest of the band, doing a gesture with his hand which relates to the target audience of the band and magazine.
All band members are making eye contact with the reader to make a better connection with the reader.

With this picture, i wanted it to fit with the caption 'The truth about...', so this is why she is not looking at the camera, as if she doesn't want to make a connection with the reader.
The clothes she is wearing is typical of females from my target audience, so they will relate to the picture.

With this picture i wanted it to be much more personal and make more of a connection to the reader. She is looking at the camera and smiling.
You can't see what clothes she is wearing, apart from the hood of the coat. The lip-stud will relate to the target audience, as it is not uncommon for the target audience of my magazine to have piercings. She also has hair over one eye, which agian, relates to the target audience.

Double Page Spread Photo:

They are from the same band as featured on the cover. you can clearly tell this by the fact they are wearing the same clothes.
The Mise-en-scene of this shot is to represent the bands target audience in an obvious way. Fristly, the posters in the background of other bands. This is common for members of the target audience. Also, the laid back / relaxed mood the band are posed in relates and appeals to the target audience. Leaned back, feet up and sitting on top of the sofa. Also, the props in the shot (the pot noodle, beer, crisps and chocolate) are things that relate to the target audience.
Again, they are all making eye contact with reader to make a better connection with the reader.

(toby picture)
This picture is actually a still frame from a movie during the bands recording session. i thought this would be a good idea as the main article is about their recording session and i had no pictures of the band, but i did record several videos. I chose this picture as you can clearly see the recording equipment in the background, and his guitar. The pose of this shot is quite comical with the cheeky smile and wave, which will give the band and article a less serious feel, and might make it more appealing to the target audience.

(chris picture)
This picture is also a still frame from a movie during the bands recording session. I choose this picture as it shows the guitarist playing his guitar. This shows gives the reader some insight on their recording session. Also, guitars obviously appeal to the target audience.

I used the 2 still frames above to break up the main article on the double page spread. With some pictures to break up the text, it will appeal more to the reader.
